~Chapter 2: Compassion's of the Goddess~
A branch crashed to earth followed swiftly by the trunk of the towering fir tree! Gasca, rolled quickly to avoid it and came up on two feet to draw back a powerfully sent arrow headlong into an ogres face! The brutes hammer flung from hand smashing four orcs under the impact of its falling head!
"Emitria!!" he cried!
His kin popped out from the logs on the forest floor and from behind the trees and a few gun blasts greeted the charging tribe of, Kirawak Mikimochum, along with the hail of spears, crossbow bolts, and arrows that joined them!
"Haw! Wee!! Yip! Yip! Ye! He!!" Gasca's family cheered, in hobgoblin imitation, as most fell dead at the volley, and countless fifties melted into the dense undergrowth on their way over the mountain passes. It had been many winters since such a grand win over their closest Kirawak enemy.
But even after t

"Betrayal has ever been my curse. Though I have loved my wives and my servants, they fail me in every case. Only with a few have I known justice. A truth devoid of baser passions. I can but only offer my trust. And hope in that, my fellowman shall be true. It is my burden, as king, borne in remorse. My substance, nurtured by doubt..."

And so it went, that the festive time drew in, and all the land were gathered for the tourney of the Fold King. The joust then held, for the choosing of gallant knights. The folk mingled and went to the open markets lain before the great spires of Several Winter Keep. Feasting and drinking was encouraged on the bounty of the harvests and the herds for this year. Each man given his crop and share, each citizen of the realm feeling well tended to.
It was heartwarming to see the nobles, only recently released from duty in the bickerin

And so the camp of Emitria was set upon by the dark horde of Kirahwak orcs, many guns brought to the fight, and for the first time in a couple centuries, many men met their fates staying the horde. The fall of the summers leaves was come, and like the leaves fading to brown or red and dropping from the branches, so too fell a great many rangers in the woodlands before the pass.
The brothers flanked the thickest side of the tree cover where Octeria planted by a wide pine and clamped down on the release of her windlass! A blot raced through the air from the high-powered crossbow! It centered the forehead of a mighty orc warrior as he lifted an ax to strike a fallen friend!
The brothers used the opportunity as the group of orcs turned to watch as the huge champion died! They came as twin wolves, leaping over a tree stump and root cluster! A hatchet dug into the head of one before he had

I think the grass is my favorite! So many shades and colors and details in it. The character is also beautifully done. Her stance is that lazy, "Look. Don't F- with me" Perfect!

This is terrific work. When I just saw the thumbnail, I actually wondered if it was a painting or a photo, which is a compliment on the level of detail that's been delivered.

My one issue with the displayed piece is that the crossbow looks off-centre. If we look at it from directly above, the bow arms and string should be reflection symmetrical along the quarrel track in the stock, and it somehow doesn't look like the righthand arm and side of the string make the same angle with the stock as the left-hand ones do. You are entirely correct about variations in stirrup shapes though.

we are not looking at it from directly above, maybe that is where your issue is

I'll accept that you're correct if you can find evidence of a crossbow with onw arm longer than the other and still capable of firing true.

they are the same size its just at an angle. other people can see this, I think its just you - maybe you should draw some yourself you seem to be very fixated on them.

idk, ladymerrethsauthor sees it... I wanted to put it at an angle so the trigger could be seen. its obvious its not straight down from the top or you wouldnt see that.

Oh, SWEET! _Not_ a woman I'd like to offend.

One minor suggestion: if you ever want to refine the crossbow image to match the realism level of the character, you probably already know you'll want to tweak it for perspective.

In the unlikely case that you don't already know all of this: If we were looking at the crossbow straight on, we'd see parallel lines--across the top of the stock, and the arms of that black cross near the tip (I can't tell if it's cut into the stock or a raised sight thingy), and the ends of the bow arms, and the side corners of the steel "stirrup" below. So, when the crossbow's held down and to one side, those same lines would still be "parallel" except in converging toward the same vanishing point, instead of having the bow arms more foreshortened than the black cross-thing, or the stirrup facing us direcly.

But that's all trivia. This picture ROCKS, both in technique and in conveying a vivid personality and mood.

Also? I have a bad case of boot envy. ;)

some stirrups are round or even slightly diamond in shape like this one
Reply
:iconnonier:
NonieR Featured By Owner Apr 22, 2013
Oh, I wasn't commenting on the stirrup's shape but its perspective; the diamond shape would be subject to the same perspective as the other items, so a line drawn across its two side corners would be parallel to a line drawn across the outer tips of the bow arms, and therefore slanted away by the same perspective relative to our PoV (so the near side would look bigger than the far side, etc.) rather than, as the stirrup seems to be, facing directly toward us.

Please let me know if this is still incoherent; I never know how to describe visual relationships.

it seems like alot of explaining over a small thing- I can't seem to visualize from your written description, it seems like the best thing is to realize that nothing is posted until the commissioner signs off on it. if you look at my other art i have some rather realistic stuff, this is illustrative, conceptual and its clearly rough, and the focus is on the character. I was given a description but no photo references, alot of creative freedom to work fast which is why the commissions were offered at this price.

I'm the commissioner of the work so its really up to my standard of approval.

I wasn't too hung up on the weapons, all I wanted was a great showing of the character and I got that. More detail means more money, and if specifically directed, Yoshi, can do any perspective/angle or actual photo image you ask her. Cost is the only issue that has baring on the works you get from her. As more detail is more time and time is money to an artist of her caliber.

The crossbow in the image has a detachable windlass, whereas I meant for it to be a standard 1200's heavy crossbow with a permanently fixed double leaver windlass on the butt of the stock.

None of that matters though. The squint in, Octe's, eyes makes up for it, and the detail of the clothing make the less focused on details more than tolerable.

No worries in any case, and sorry if I offended. I just have enough friends who *demand* I send constructive crits that I feel guilty if I don't try. ;)

And as I said, Octeria herself is so *gorgeously* drawn that the crossbow's a trivial matter anyway.

Enjoying looking at her all over again,
